The main focus of our work is in providing longer-term therapeutic family placements for children and young people who are considered hard to place, because of emotional or behavioural problems that result from abusive or neglectful early experiences, or trauma.
We also provide short-term mother and baby placements, with access to psychiatric and psychological assessment, and observation, and treatment of parent/child interactions.
When a young person is referred to Kaleidoscope we will discuss within our team and with the child’s social worker which of our families can best meet their needs. If there are concerns about serious mental illness, or dangerous behaviour, we seek the opinion of our psychiatric consultant before offering a place.
Caring for highly disturbed youngsters is a demanding task. Support and training for our carers is a key part of the Kaleidoscope culture, enabling them to continue to work creatively and with humour, offering very challenging young people a safe and nurturing environment. During their stay with our Kaleidoscope foster carers each child receives individual psychotherapy and educational support.
We endeavour to work within an equal opportunities and anti-discriminatory framework and endeavour to place children within families who reflect their particular ethnic and cultural needs.
